The method behind a number

A useful figure keeps its units, operating conditions and stopping rule attached.

A useful figure keeps its units, operating conditions and stopping rule attached.

A number is part of a sentence

A capacity, an output and a claimed endurance count describe different quantities. Even a carefully formatted comparison can lose meaning when it strips away units or mixes manufacturer language with independent measurement. Start by recording the original field and what it is meant to describe.

Conditions make comparison possible

An endurance result changes meaning with operating mode, duration and the point at which a test stops. Where these conditions are missing, the appropriate editorial response is to identify the gap. Guessing a typical method does not make the figures comparable.

Attach identity to the result

The model, market and revision should travel with the measurement. A result for a neighbouring variant can be relevant background while still being the wrong evidence for a particular claim. A clear record lets readers see that distinction.

Use uncertainty constructively

An unknown field is useful when it points to the next document or experiment needed. It is less useful to replace that gap with an attractive estimate. The Claim Compass provides a reading route for endurance statements without turning them into product recommendations.
